Procedure

For a TrichoScan® analysis, an area of approximately 2 cm² is first shaved on a thinning part of the scalp. This is barely visible to other people afterwards when the hair from the surrounding area is combed over it. The shortened hair naturally grows back. The shaved area is then photographed with a special camera. The image is automatically evaluated on the computer. Determining hair density, hair number and also the number of terminal and vellus hairs allows good control of hair growth. The measurement can be carried out within one day.

As of version 5, dyeing the hair is usually no longer necessary. Dyeing may only be necessary if there is a lot of grey hair that appears transparent due to the polarization of the cameras.

If the telogen rate (proportion of hair in the loss phase) is to be determined, the hair is only measured three days after shaving. After several months, the recording procedure is repeated to compare the results. This allows a change in hair loss to be well monitored and objectively assessed. The advantage of this method is that the images are taken quickly and easily, the procedure is painless, and the results are reproducible and can be archived.
