TrichoScan® - overview

Short description

Image capture and analysis

TrichoScan is a computer-assisted hair analysis method. A small area of the scalp is photographed and evaluated by software. This makes it possible to measure parameters such as hair density and growth activity objectively.

How does an analysis work?

  1. Select a measurement area, usually on the top of the scalp or another typical area of concern
  2. Prepare that area, depending on the chosen method, so the hairs can be measured reliably
  3. Capture close-up images of the scalp and hair roots with a dedicated camera
  4. Run the software evaluation and generate a results report
  5. Review the results and discuss any next steps or follow-up measurements

Interpreting the results

  • Hair density (hairs/cm²): shows how dense the area appears overall. Higher = denser.
  • Hair shaft diameter / thickness distribution: shows whether many hairs are becoming thinner, which is important when evaluating thinning.
  • Cumulative hair thickness density (hair mass): combines hair density and hair thickness into one overall value that describes how full or voluminous the hair appears.
  • Vellus vs. terminal hair ratio: distinguishes very fine, short hairs from stronger, thicker hairs. A higher vellus share can indicate early thinning.

Additional results (not available with TrichoScan FAST)

  • Anagen/telogen ratio (%): shows how many hairs are actively growing versus resting or shedding. A high anagen proportion is usually a positive sign.
